The Wonderful World of American Advertisements, 1865-1900

A pictorial anthology of reproductions of "the overly-ornamental and
elaborate advertising style" foreword in the post-Civil War era up to
1900. Illustrations are divided into four general topics: "Health,"
"Pleasure," "Miscellaneous," and "Beauty," and arranged in chronological
groups within each division. 137 pages of reproductions probably mostly
full-size , generally with one to six per page, depending on size of
the advertisement. Illustrations lack attribution. Material for persons
interested in 19th-century American type styles, printing and design, or
in advertising and commercial art. Also of interest to students of
American social history or the history of health quackery.
